Hematology

Hematology is a branch of medicine concerning the study of blood, the blood-forming organs, and blood diseases. The word “heme” comes from the Greek for blood. Hematology is practiced by specialists in the field who deal with the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of people with blood disorders ranging from anemia to blood cancer.

Oncology

Oncology is the branch of medicine that diagnoses and treats tumors, which is a term for cancer. To say it in simply words, oncology is that part of medicine that deals entirely with cancer and tumors. Oncology consists of the diagnosis and treatment of tumors essentially. All tumors are not cancers and oncology is not restricted to just cancers.

Some of the diseases treated by hematologists include:

  • Iron deficiency anaemia and other types of anemia such as sickle cell anemia or trauma-related anemia
  • Platelet and bleeding disorders such as hemophilia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and Von Willebrand disease
  • Hemoglobinopathies such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease
  • Polycythemia or excess production of red blood cells
  • Myelofibrosis
  • Leukemia
  • The myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Malignant lymphomas
